Concept Art
To start off this unit, i'd like to introduce the meaning of 'concept art'. People use concept art to display their ideas that they have for variety of reasons such as video games, film, animation, comics etc. Designing concept art can go through a series of fazes, usually artists that draw concept art have many other drawings showing development in ways that they can improve their first idea. Concept art has been around for years, even in the early years back in the 1930's with Disney animation. Below are some artists that show some examples of concept art.
Donar John Boado:

I havent heard of this artist before, recently just looked at his concept art. But what really caught my eye was the sci-fi style. When drawing sci-fi concept art, limitation doesn't come into play. Concept artists that draw sci-fi concept art let their imagination run wild, every persons interpretation of sci-fi differs in certain ways. I like Boado's view towards sci-fi art because it gets to the point. The character he has drawn has shadowing, depth, colour and stands out massively. The sword catches my eye at first sight which then leads onto the character design, and then looking at the gun that's being fired. But lets go beyond that, because as you can see, the background behind the character has been drawn with very bland and dull colours, yet still hints at an interesting scene portraying a battle of some sort. Although he has limited the amount of colours used in the background, what is actually going on makes it interesting enough to keep looking back at it.
In my opinion after looking at the first image I presented to you, this picture above seems very simple which is the exact reason to why I like it. The level of detail within the character itself is minimal, the level of colour and tone is minimal and it's a very simplistic design. However, the background is plane and quite boring, which is actually the strength of the picture. It forces you to focus on only the character itself. If he had drawn a background on this drawing, the colours he has chosen for the character design wouldn't have worked well, it would have been hard to make out it's actual potential of being a good piece of concept art.
Jerad S. Marantz:

Marantz specialises in drawing creature and character design concept art and has been drawing in the film/game industrie for over 15 years now. It goes without saying that this drawing is really good, and gives off a horror type feeling. Drawing a white creature with a black background is a very obvious thing to do in my opinion, it stands out really well. You don't need to over do the tone and depth either because of the black background, that alone sets the tone of the entire concept art. The detail in this drawing really inspires me a lot, you can clearly see that a lot as gone into this drawing, a lot of thought and time that was well spent.
I simply like this piece of concept art because it looks cool. The idea and design structure of this is exact and looks like is was suppose to be like that before it was even drawn. I like how the design has so much in depth detail, it makes it stand out from the background which is also built up from similar colours
Harmony & Dissonance
Portal 2 concept art.
Dissonance is as clear as day in this picture. This picture gives off a lifeless atmosphere, everything is destroyed and not a single form of life is about. The depth and harsh colours of the walls and floor have a very aggressive texture which shows that what ever happend to this place has had a massive impact.
I think that when people look at this piece of concept are, it gets misjudged. Yes its clear to say that dissonance has its presence in this picture, but that isn't to say that there is no harmony what so ever. The overgrowth and plant life is making this picture look more vibrant than what most other concept pieces from this game looks like.
