Unit 44 - Website Design

Learning Webdesign

Wednesday 3rd September:

Today we went onto Code Academy to learn basic coding. Each task we complete on Code Academy with reward us with a badge!

The task was to add text in between the <strong> and </strong> code. <strong>Feel free to include text here</strong>

I put: <strong> Subscribe to my YouTube channel </strong> and got the badge!

After, I proceeded onto the next ask which consists of learning the meanings of HTML. The 'HT' part stands for HyperText which basically means hyperlink, e.g. When you click on a piece of text, it links you to the next page. The 'ML' part stands for Markup Language which is a form of programming that makes a website do more than just sit on a page. E.g. It can turn text into charts, images, lists etc.

This then goes on to explaining the meat of a website. What makes it look amazing. Using something called CSS (Cascading Style Sheets) you can make the website look all pretty!

The task explained to me that <!DOCTYPE html>  means that it's telling the document that we are using HTML code to make it. This means on the first line of the document, it has to start with <!DOCTYPE html> in order to proceed with the code.

On the line underneath it, we have to put <html>. This means that we are now going to start typing the code on the line underneath it. Once we are done with the code, we then end it with </html>, this lets the code know that we are done.

From using what I have just learnt from the tutorial, I now have to type it up.

After, I learned how to include a title in code. like every document, we start the code off with <!DOCTYPE html> and then underneath that we put <html>. Thats what we previously learned. Now to include a title, on a new line we now have to put <head> which means its the top of the page. Now on another new line, we have to let the code know what we want at the top of the page, in our case we want a title. To start our title we have to put <title> and then make a new line typing our title. After, make another new line and type </title>, this tells the code that our title has ended. Since that is all I want at the top of my page at the moment, we end the head with </head>.

To let the script know that you are typing a paragraph, on a new line put <body> and then underneath that put <p>. This starts your paragraph. After putting <p>, type your paragraph, then when your done, end it with </p>.

Then you get this!

Skipping a head a bit. Inserting a link to somewhere requires you to put:
<a href= "https://www.youtube.com"> (insert description here)
</a>
DONE!

Paper Templates

I was put into a group and we all designed paper templates of a website so we can physically see it and show the mechanics of which page goes where and where images are going to be placed.

 Putting together my website

This layout in my opinion is my favourite layout design because it's very simplistic and doesn't look too complex to make (Even though it really was) to I design to go with this design.

The first time making my website template from scratch was nearly impossible for me. I could understand any of it. Essentially all I did was copy and paste the code for the basic template and then stare at the code to see if I could work it out.
After playing around with the code, I slowly and gradually started to understand it. Fails started turning into successes. Also, this was near the end of the lesson so I had to take that little bit of skill I learnt home with me and get on with it there.
The picture that you can see above is the template I got whilst I was in college. I knew what type of template I wanted to achieve at the end of it and decided to look at the code again just to refresh my memory. I also went back to code academy to game some more knowledge but that didn't go so well as it kept messing up on my computer (because luck) so I resulted into playing around with it again.

My first objective was to put Twitter, Facebook and YouTube icons in and onto my website. To do this, I went onto Google Images and inspected the element of the code by right clicking onto the image and then clicking "Inspect Element".

This then brought up the code that I needed to paste into my code. I done this for all three images and the changed the height and width of them all to how big I'd like them all to be. After I then bumped into a little problem, I wanted all three images underneath each other rather then next to each other. After a good hour of figuring this out on my own (literally not looking for help what so ever) I tried inserting <div> and </div> everywhere. I put each image code underneath each other and then started/ended them all with <div> and </div>. This then put them all underneath each other. They were all a bit to big after this so I went back to the height and width of each image and changed them all to "50". Because I'm really smart, this all took me about 4 hours to figure out. Even if it I did just explain it in a really simple fashion.

As you can see in the image about, there is a MASSIVE paragraph that isn't even in English (because confusion) and I didn't want it there. In fact, I wanted an image there advertising Poetry Slam rather than a big chunk of text. This was dead simple, just find a massive paragraph in the code that wasn't written in English and delete it. Then all I did was find an image on Google that said, "[insert image here]" and inspected the element of that image and copied the code. I then started another <div> code and pasted the code of the image underneath (this was all above the social networking images code I put earlier) and then on a new line right underneath the image code, I ended it with a </div> code.

Here is a picture of the coding I'd done. Underneath is a picture of the website.

Evaluating the process of creating a webpage

Thursday 2nd October 2014

In class today, Mike viewed our websites on the interactive board infront of the class and got other peoples opinions on them. I was really glad about this because when it came to my website, I got a good view on what I should improve on such as images, description of what the website is about and tweak the overal design layout of the website to make it look more professional.

Unit - 54

1)   Slender-Man video filmed either in Barrow Gurney or lee-woods.
I’ll have one person filming me as if it was a live documentary, and one actor that play the slender-man. The editing evolved in the video will include static on the camera and video effects.

2)   Portal 2 short films – This will evolve a lot of green screen and time. Which is fine because it’s Portal 2. Sound effects and voice manipulation is also something that will be included. This video is two minutes long so I haven’t got much time to play about with. A short idea that I have got is someone running down several corridors whilst constantly being targeted by turrets shooting at you. The actor will fire portals to get to places faster whilst being taunted with sarcastic harsh comments from the A.I core GLaDOS. The short film will end with the actor walking into GLaDOS’s chamber; GLaDOS says a ‘cliff-hanger’ sentence, which will then lead onto a subtle black screen to then reveal the credits.

3)   Haunted house – This can be filmed at gage’s house

4)   A two minute interview about something interesting

5)   Will include poltergeist activity and a lot of see through string

6)   Sit-com – This must include Ramseys

The three ideas that I have chosen are with video links giving examples:

Final Design Idea

The film opens with the main menu of Slender: The Arrival as if I was going to record another video and as soon as I start click ‘start game’, it switches straight to reality of a long shot with the main actor led on the floor asleep.

The camera switches straight over to a close up of the main actor led on the floor, his eyes open. The camera then opens up as medium shot of the main actor getting up and wondering where he is.

Just after, the camera changes over to a worms eye view next to a camera and a torch looking up at the main actor.

Evaluation Bradley Hahn

Unit 54 was all about producing a film and developing your editing skills. We were all asked to film a series of sketches and edit them together.  Although filming can be fun, it was the editing that was getting marked upon.

The main thing in my opinion was the final film idea. After we made a series of sketches, we all had to make a film that was roughly 2 minutes.  I edit a lot of videos before so editing isn’t something new for me. I thought really long and hard about the different types of edits I could make that will stand out.

My main film was about slender man. I made an initial storyboard showing a rough idea of what I wish to happen in my film, then I made another storyboard showing the final idea of what I wish to happen.

We done research into films by watching a presentation from our teacher of different camera angles and then made a series of films showing different camera angles of our own.

A friend of mine lives in Portishead where there is a massive creepy forest which was great for where I wanted to start my film if me waking up in a forest at night.

A few mistakes that I feel I have made was the lighting on the camera, I feel that more camera angles could have been made as well.  At the start, the camera starts out with the forest with me on the floor and then it starts again with me stood up already. I feel that this can be improved a lot and that maybe next time I should add more scenes.

I learned that filming in general is a lot tougher that what I thought. Editing wise, I didn’t really struggle that much because I’ve edited a lot of videos in the past. Going to Portishead filming was a lot of fun and I really enjoyed this unit a lot.

If I were eligible to more time I would improve on adding more scenes and making the special effects for crisp. I felt that on the last few scenes when Slender appeared, it was too rushed and I feel I should have spent more time on it.

During the filming I felt that it went quite easy until it was dark. Walking through the forest at day was easy because navigation was visible. Walking through it at the evening was quite tough because it was harder to see and I felt un easy.

Later on in my film there is an abandoned building, which involved walking quite far and at night that was quite tough as well because I felt tired.

Next time if I were to make a film, I chose an easier location that doesn’t cost as much money and time to get to. I would have focused on getting more people involved so that camera management would be easier and better to handle. Slender is a very quiet “genre” to film so maybe next time I’d get more actors to help me out and make it more entertaining to watch rather than just walking around a dark forest on my own.

Unit 34 - Image manipulation Computer Applications

Collage 1

From the very start of this project, I knew what type of background texture I'd like my collage to have. A very gritty, grey and creepy texture that when you look at it, it gives off dull vibe.

To get this texture, I took a picture of the table that I'm sat next to and then played around with the vibrancies, glow, colour and depth to eventually get the finished texture that I wanted.

I took a walk to Brandon hill and took a picture of a tree. I'm going to try make it look as if the tree is on fire as show in one of the sketches above.

So after I uploaded the picture I took, I cropped out the background and then applied an overlay to the image to blend in into the background. Because the background texture is dark grey with harsh patterns all over it, having a bright green tree put infront of it looked a bit horrible, so I added a overlay effect which as you can see, actually worked out pretty good.

Fire was in the tree of the idea that I was going to do. Because one of my initial ideas had fire coming out from the tree.

You will notice you can see a suit in the fire, my idea was to portray my fear coming out from the fire, in my case I was trying to make a Slender-man.

I finally managed to get hold of a slender-man image to put inside the suit. I copy and pasted the image several times to give of a good effect.

Then like I described before, I put images of jump scares of my own and portrayed them underneath the tree. Since my collage is about fear, I wanted to show off fear in my scary reactions.

I ended the collage off with several text art and minor effects.

Collage 2

For my second collage I wanted to go for something simple with a white background to make the blood the focal point of the collage.

I then decided to add fear elements of my own imbedded into the blood.

I then added text into the blood to give off a scratchy text effect.

I decided that the white background left to much empty space, so I decided to get a texture and add it into the background. Over all I think it emphases the blood even more and gives off a great effect. This is my final outcome.

Artist Critique

The artist I have chosen for my critique is Sue Coe. I feel, in my own personal opinion, that Sue relates to my work the most. Her work feels very dark and abstract which gives off the effect of terror and fear which is what I was trying to going for in my collage.
There is one particular piece of work that Sue had drawn evolving a skull; she interprets images into different parts of the skull. For example, in the image she has drawn what appears to be a pigs head peering out from the skull’s eye socket. In one of my collages that I have produce, you will see that I have actually tried to do the same thing; such has an image appearing out from a tree that has been set on fire.
If you take a look at some of Sue’s work, you will notice that most if not all posters are pretty much grey and black, this is something I can also related to in one of my pieces of work because I wanted it to have a very dull, scratchy feel to it to represent that feel of fear and terror.
The amount of detail with shading that Sue has put into the work really shows how in-depth she wishes to get the message across with certain aspects of her work. My collage is based of fear and I have included what I’m personally scared of, I wanted to give off the message that everyone’s interpretation of fear is always different. Some people find that dark gloomy places are quite scary, but others may find that the fear of not knowing something scares them. I felt that showing off own my personal fear will force people to think about what their fear is and see for their selves how much is differs.
I’ve also noticed that in her artwork, although most of it is black and grey, when there is colour, she wants you to see that first. It literally forces the eye to look straight at the colour to figure out what it going on in her drawing. With my collages, I’ve added very obvious vocal points that stand out from my background so that when people look at my work, they get forced into seeing what I mainly wanted to show.
One thing that really shone out to me was how Sue’s work is drawn as if it’s all suppose to be there. Everything that she had added into her drawings is so surreal and abstract yet fit the environment and situation that is going on. The real challenge that I felt was quite tough for me, was doing what Sue had professionally achieved which was making the abstract and surreal perfectly work together. I felt that during my work, using overlays on the images worked perfectly and simply blurring out the edges make them not seem so apparent and wrong.

Design Report

In this unit we were expected to make two collages on a particular subject of our choice, in my case, I chose fear. The reason to why I have chosen fear is because everyone expresses and interprets fear in their own way, meaning that it’s always different. I felt by making two collages on my fear, would show other people my point of view on how I feel fear is.

I didn’t want to go into this project blind, so I decided to take some time into doing a bit of research on how different people portrayed their own ideas of fear. I gathered some pictures together and annotated them explaining my likes and dislikes about the pictures I have selected and picked up a few ideas and inspirations from a few. There was one specific picture I really enjoyed annotating because the collage was just filled with a load of harsh, scratchy textures with really crooked text going all over it. I felt that portraying fear in such a schizophrenic tone gave it that added depth and atmosphere to the collage itself.

So after taking inspiration from a few other collages, I then decided tog et straight to the drawing board and start design some initial ideas on how I wish my collage to look like as a finished product. As you just read in the paragraph above, I took a huge amount of inspiration from the collage that had that schizophrenic tone and decided to make a start first on an idea based around those using different types of fear I’m scared of such as fire and The Slender-Man.

After I draw about four or five different ideas, I then decided to look at various focal points on different collages and what makes certain areas stand out more than others to get a specific message across. I saw things like, making the background of a collage completely white and then only adding simplistic ideas onto the white base in various colours that stand out.

Researching the focal points gave me another idea on what I wish my second collage to look like. I had an idea for the first one where everything is dark, gloomy with harsh textures. But now I wanted to take a gentler approach to my idea of fear and try adding fewer images and make it easier to the eye to look at. This considers of lighter colours, not overloaded with images and not too much text.

Eventually I then moved onto design various mood boards about fear. So this time I wasn’t researching collages. I felt that just limiting myself to research collages based on fear meant that I wasn’t getting the full package on other types of fear that maybe haven’t been included in collages. I found some really horrifying and interesting images and put them all together to make various mood boards.

After having all the research and annotations I felt I needed, I felt really confidant with how I wanted my final collages to look like and decided to gather the appropriate images I needed. After some hard work I finalized my two collages and printed them both off in A3 paper ready to be presented. After they were printed off, I then moved onto putting some research into a an artist named Sue Coe who has drawn various pieces of artwork that I felt related to work quite a lot and then wrote a artist critique explaining how my work related to Sue’s work.
